Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker review (spoilers)

The Star Wars sequel trilogy so far has, in my opinion unfairly, gotten a lot of flack from Star Wars fans. While there was initially a positive buzz about The Force Awakens when it first released in 2015, fan reception has gotten less favourable over time with fans merely dismissing it as a copy of the original Star Wars film from 1977. Then in 2017, Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi decided to take the story and plot points set up in The Force Awakens in different directions and ended up dividing the fanbase as a result. This puts The Rise of Skywalker in a bit of a tricky position. Not only does it have to satisfyingly wrap up the 'Skywalker Saga', but it also has to satisfy the fans who felt alienated by the previous two entries. While this film does have some interesting ideas, it's messy plot holds it back from sticking the landing it intends to. The film is set one year after The Last Jedi, and the plot sees Emperor Palpatine, the mastermind behind the first ...

'Toxic' Fandoms

I've been thinking about writing something about this topic for a while, but what spurred me on to get around to actually writing about it was seeing a post on my Facebook feed the other day regarding fans of Game of Thrones starting a petition to remake the show's recent 8th season. Now, I definitely wouldn't consider myself a GOT fan (I watched the first season about four years ago and never got back into it) so I'm not as bothered about seeing spoilers on my social media feeds, but from what I can gather, this season has been rather controversial with fans. Most the criticism I've seen from people following it appears to be legitimate criticism (at least on the surface), but seeing news that some fans were starting a petition to get HBO to spend an awful lot of money to remake something they had just spent a similar amount of money on just because they personally didn't like it reminded me of how fans of a certain franchise that I do consider myself a big fan...

Five movies that are worse than 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'

Before we get started today, I thought I'd make one thing clear: I fucking love The Last Jedi. Sure, Canto Bight feels really out of place tonally, Captain Phasma was yet again a complete waste, and the scene where Rose kisses Finn at the end feels super awkward and forced considering they lack believable chemistry, but overall, I thought it was a brilliant entry in the Star Wars franchise that tried different things and took the story into new directions rather than just retreading what we've seen before in previous films. Heck, I consider it my third favourite film in the series so far below Empire and A New Hope and just above The Force Awakens (yes, I prefer them both to Return of the Jedi). However, some people don't seem to share my enjoyment of The Last Jedi for various reasons. Be it that it contradicted their fan theories or felt the film had a so called 'feminist agenda'. Don't get me wrong, I understand people have legitimate reasons for dislik...
